So, I was invited to join Quechup, a Friendster/MySpace type site. Okay. Why not?
When starting the account, you have the option of entering your e-mail address so that Quechup can access your address book and tell you if any of your contacts are on Quechup.
The site fails, however, to mention that they then send invitations to everyone in your address books. This includes all my professional contacts--all my bosses, my bosses' bosses, former co-workers, and potential future employers. I therefore, unkowingly invaded everyones' inboxes many times over.
In the 24 hours during which I was a member of Quechup, I received 2 "friend" requests from sexually-explict gropus. This then compunds the problem, as I am responsible for essentially advertising a sexually suggestive website to everyone I know.
I canceled my membership, and lit into them with a nasty e-mail.

I am sorry for any of you who I offended with my unknowing barrage of e-mails, and DO NOT join Quechup!
Please pass along my appologies to anyone who does not read my LJ but may be in my address books.

Damn, I should've read this before I followed up on your Quechup thingie (oh well, couldn't sign you up for it anyway). Had no idea they were that sleazy.

Quechup spamming
Having just been Quechup-spammed myself, I did a search to see how far back this problem has gone on. I expected it to only have been a problem over the last few weeks or maybe even months. This is the oldest reference to the problem that I can find on the Internet, and I'm quite surprised to see that Quechup has been spamming people for 18 months and counting (although there has been something of an explosion of complaints about it over the last month or so). I would have thought they would have been forced to change their registration system by now, but apparently not.

I wish I had seen this before I fell for it this weekend!
